Hello, and welcome to my author services!

I’m Selina R. Gonzalez, author of four independently published fantasy books (and several unpublished manuscripts and a few works-in-progress). I hold a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in English (with a focus on literature) from Colorado State University and an Associate of Applied Science in Communication Multimedia (where I learned a lot of my foundational tech skill) from Aims Community College. I also completed a semester abroad at the University of Oxford. I’ve been writing fiction for fourteen years and have been attending writer’s conferences and studying craft for around twelve years.

As a fellow author, I know the struggle between wanting to invest in your writing craft and business and having a limited budget. I have an analytical mind that enjoys problem solving, and I also love seeing fellow authors succeed. I look forward to helping you achieve your writing goals in an affordable way.

Editing Services

I am passionate about story and bring that excitement to your book baby, along with a fresh outside perspective to help detect your manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses.

Currently, I offer two levels of developmental/content editing – one with less feedback as a budget option (because sometimes every dollar counts) and one with more feedback, as well as line edits. Keep reading for explanations of what each edit entails, or scroll all the way to the bottom to request an edit (or more information) now.

My feedback is always a suggestion – my goal is to help you strengthen your manuscript, but as the author, you always know your story best!

NB: I do not do edits on the following genres: non-fiction, erotica, contemporary, magical realism, horror, poetry, or westerns. (As I don’t read these genres and therefore am unfamiliar with their genre expectations, and another editor would be a better fit.) I do not edit books with explicit sexual content, pervasive strong language, or graphic and gratuitous gore.

Full guidelines and terms:
  • Half of payment is due before I begin, the rest upon completion UNLESS the manuscript is under 25,000 words, in which case the full payment is due before I begin.
  • Payment processed through PayPal.
  • I reserve the right to decline working with any author or on any project I don’t think I will be a good fit for or am uncomfortable with.
  • I also reserve the right to terminate editing services at any point due to content issues for a 50% refund on payment already made.
  • I offer a 50% refund if you find my edits are not satisfactory.

Free Sample Edit

Do you want to make sure we will be a good fit? Want to see what my comments would look like before committing? I offer a free sample edit of the first chapter of your book up to 2,000 words.

Time frame: Approximately one week

Budget Developmental Edit

This edit looks at the big picture and is perfect if you need someone to help you determine if your story as a whole is working – and what to do if it’s not. This edit looks at overall pacing, story arc, character arcs, worldbuilding, tone, effectiveness, and consistency and checks for plot holes. Feedback will address what is done beautifully and what can be strengthened to better engage readers. Feedback is given in 2 to 5 typed, double-spaced pages of notes with references to specific chapters or scenes where necessary. Includes up to three email follow-up conversations.

I recommend that you have done at least one self-edit and are on at least your second draft before requesting this edit. There’s nothing more frustrating than hiring an editor and then realizing all the changes you could have made first. An editor is much more effective when they catch the things you couldn’t see, rather than wasting both our time telling you what you already know. PLEASE also clean up your manuscript first. It’s hard to see or appreciate a carving if it’s covered in wood shavings and sawdust, so please don’t send me prose that is in unread, rough-draft form.

Time frame: Up to 125,000 words: Approximately one month or less. 125-180k words: Approximately two months. Books over 180k taken on a case by case basis, and may take up to three months.
Pricing: $1.25 per 1,000 words (This edit only: Rounded down under x,700, rounded up over x,700 – for example, 82,578 words would be billed as 82k words even.)

Full Content Edit

This is a more in-depth developmental edit. In addition to looking at big picture pacing, arcs, worldbuilding, consistency, tone, effectiveness, and plot holes, this edit looks at those issues within individual chapters and scenes. I will give in-document comments and reactions (using the comment feature on Microsoft Word or Google Docs) as well as 3 to 8 typed, double-spaced pages of notes. I may also make some line edit or grammar notes. Includes up to three email follow-up conversations.

Line Edit

This edit is designed for after you have completed a few rounds of self-edits (and/or have had a developmental/content edit or at least early readers) and are confident in your big picture story. As part of your self-edits, you also should have cleaned up any issues you noticed in the prose, as an editor is much more effective when they catch the things you couldn’t see, rather than wasting both our time telling you what you already know. The line edit helps elevate your prose on the sentence level by evaluating sentence variation, word choice, consistency of voice, realism of dialogue, and looks for repeat words and actions – such as if your character bites their lip ten times in chapter twelve. 😉

This is NOT a full copy edit – it is not focused on grammar or punctuation, although I will likely make notes about grammar or punctuation issues, particularly if they repeat frequently. I may also comment if I notice any glaring big picture issues.

Edits are done in Microsoft Word using Track Changes and Comments or in Google Docs using Suggestions and Comments.

Time frame: Up to 125,000 words: five weeks. 125-180k words: two months.
Pricing: $0.0025 per word ($2.5 per 1k words)

Testimonials

“Selina excels at finding what isn’t working, whether that’s pacing, character inconsistencies, or plot holes and brainstorming how to fix them.”
-Becky Gaines

“Selina’s keen eye and attention to detail made my story a thousand times better. I am an English teacher with a degree in English, so I pride myself on how well I can edit…and yet, Selina was still able to find errors and suggest edits in relation to punctuation and grammatical issues as well as issues with content. Every suggestion Selina made was with kindness and grace. Her patience and encouragement is one of the reasons I was able to finish my novel. I cannot fully express how highly I recommend her to authors seeking editing services.”
-Rowan Wright

Fiction Book Formatting

Does trying to get page numbers to go where they’re supposed to and NOT where they aren’t supposed to make you want to pull out your hair? Are you confused about margins and indents and gutters? Not quite sure why that self-published book looks professional but something just seems off about the look of that one’s pages? Don’t want to spend all the time I did teaching myself formatting? Let me help you put out a clean, professional book without hassle.

WHAT I WILL NOT FORMAT: Poetry (not familiar), erotica or anything with explicit sexual content, manuscripts with pervasive strong language or graphic, gratuitous gore. (I have to do some skimming to check for formatting errors or to check line spacing, hyphenating, and widows and orphans for paperback.) Non-fiction I may accept on a case-by-case basis.

Full guidelines and terms:
  • Full payment due upfront.
  • Payment processed through PayPal.
  • I reserve the right to decline working with any author or on any project I don’t think I will be a good fit for or am uncomfortable with.
  • I also reserve the right to terminate formatting services at any point due to content issues for a 50% refund on payment already made.
